The Path of Loving Words, Page Two

Request From Rainbow Bridge
Written by Constance Jenkins, suggested by Darla Duffey

Weep not for me though I am gone into that gentle night
Grieve if you will, but not for long upon my soul's sweet flight.
I am at peace, my soul's at rest, there is no need for tears.
For with your love I was so blessed for all these many years.
There is no pain, I suffer not, the fear now all is gone.
Put now these things out of your thoughts, in your memory I live on.
Remember not my fight for breath, remember not the strife.
Please do not dwell upon my death, but celebrate my life.

Rainbow Bridge, The Sequel

Oh, when we get to Heaven
We hope that we will find
The Souls that once we loved,
Who left us all behind.
Some left us at the right time,
They left this world in peace,
Others left too sudden,
Without the chance to say Good-bye.
They were gone before we had
The chance to even cry
There's a special place for grownups,
A special place for kids;
Me, I'll be on the other side,
The side called Rainbow Bridge.
Across the dark green meadow,
Atop the hills I'll run.
Where the colors from the Rainbow
Glitter from the sun.
And there I'll find my sweetheart
Running fast toward me.
In my arms where he belongs
FOR ALL ETERNITY.

~If It Should Be~

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done
For this, the last battle can't be won.

You will be sad - I understand
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest
Your love and friendship stand the test.

We've had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend
Only, stay with me until the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know, in time, you too, will see
It is a kindness you do for me
Although my tail, its last has waved
From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't grieve that it should be you
Who must decide this thing to do
We've been so close, through all these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

The Splendor of Heaven

Young I am, yet an ageless soul
God placed me in your merciful hands,
And with your strength and knowledge
I learned of earthly plans.
*
Not of diamonds,
Nor of gold,
But in the treasures of my journey
That strengthens my learning soul.
*
In your eyes I see your wisdom,
But know I've traveled far;
And with my strength and knowledge,
I continue my journey afar.
*
Now in Heaven,
And from the Earth,
The passage of our journeys
Prepares me for my birth.
*
An enriched soul
Born to Heaven today,
But not without your strength and knowledge
And courage to lead the way.

If tears could build a stairway,
And memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to Heaven
And bring you home again...

Grieve not
Nor speak of me with tears
But laugh and talk of me
As if I was beside you...
I loved you so
Twas heaven here with you

Kennel Keeper
by Lois Hurst Beattie, Copyright 1985

I think God has an angel
Who cares for faithful pets,
And softly whistles when it's time
For them to come to rest.
She heard his call though I could not;
She sighed and twitched her ears.
And turned her love-filled eyes to me.
I quelled hot welling tears.
She pressed her dry nose 'gainst my arm -
She never was one to roam,
But she sensed time for embarking
To a new and distant home.
I could scarcely bear to give her up,
But I knew she couldn't stay.
She was old and sick, and could not speak,
Roll-over, jump or play.
God's whistling Kennel Keeper
Tends a kennel warm and fair,
He'll feed her well, and smooth her fur,
Bed her down with loving care.
She will romp again with a wide-eyed boy
Who will laugh and call her "Dear",
'Cause when he went up there to live,
He left his puppy here.

~ I Lost a Treasured Friend ~

I lost a treasured friend today
The little dog who used to lay
Her gentle head upon my knee
And share her silent thoughts with me...

She'll come no longer to my call
Retrieve no more her favorite ball
A voice far greater than my own
Has called her to His golden throne.

Although my eyes are filled with tears,
I thank Him for the happy years
He let her spend down here with me
And for her love and loyalty.

When it is time for me to go
And join her there, this much I know -
I shall not fear the transient dark,
For she greet me with her bark.

This submission came to me from a somewhat unlikely source, but is SO heartfelt and certainly bears including here-

This is one of the kindest things you may ever see-

It is not known who replied, but there is a beautiful soul working in the dead letter office of the U.S. Postal Service.

Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to Heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in Heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to Heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, "To Meredith" in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, "When A Pet Dies." Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey and Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in Heaven.

Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.

Abbey isn't sick any more. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in Heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have, I picked her especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.

By the way, I'm easy to find. I am wherever there is love.

Love,

God
