August 29, 2004, our Sarah married her love and father of her soon-to-be-born baby girl, Hannah. In the midst of the catastrophic illness and subsequent death of my mother, we pulled a wedding together. We had hoped, earlier, Grandma would be well enough to physically join us in celebration, but as it turns out, she was able to only attend in love and spirit.

It was a hectic day but pulled off pretty much without a hitch, as the pictures below will tell-

The ceremony and reception area were the same, but it was a very small collection of loved family and friends...

The wedding flowers, including a small "Grandmother's" bouquet. Though she could not attend, I was at her side just 2 days after the wedding and was able to hand her bouquet to her. Not the same, but next-best!

Lots of friends and the mama to help

The Mama. I realize it is not evident in this picture, but the day was rather warm, very humid, the morning starting off with a very light fog of rain, and I was sweating like a pig! Guess that's the price of an early-onset "change of life". The ceremony itself was to have been outside, but due to weather all activities were confined indoors.

No wedding is complete, of course, without a wedding cake.

This is Sarah's. White cake with white fondant frosting decorated with tiny white star flowers over all areas of the cake, and with pale blue/lavender buttercream roses making a border around the bottom of each layer, and on the tops of all but the top layer.

Just the cake itself-

You may be interested to know, the Mama - yes, me, the Mama Amy - made the wedding cake.

Long story short, Sarah wanted "traditional" which to her meant 3 tiers which to the pocketbook meant anywhere from $400 to $800 depending on who made it. When I realized how much it would cost (and with not a small amount of coaxing from a few friends and my own mother), I decided, "I can do this!"

And so, I did!

Close-up of the top layer. It is easy to see here how one of the roses looks pale lavender, one looks pale blue, and another looks like a combination of the two.

I never imagined I could create something so beautiful. Interestingly, I have done two other wedding cakes since then, all of them three tiers, but neither of them quite as big as this one was.

Sarah has said all along, she thinks the first one - hers - was by far the best and most beautiful. These are compliments hard for me to accept- it was ONLY CAKE!

Last on cake is the groom's cake. He wanted chocolate-chocolate-chocolate with strawberries, and I came up with this wild mess.

Many were quite disappointed when this chocolate concoction was consumed long before even a dent was made on the bride's cake-
