The Fall of 1999 was, by far, the most glorious autumn we had seen in years around here. Trees offered up the most brilliant of colors, and the skies were crisp and clear, that very special Carolina blue we Tarheels love so much- Unlike any of the previous or subsequent autumns we have lived in central Carolina, this one was unbelievably brilliant for color, all the way around. For once the right amount of rainfall mixed with the right amount of chilly weather to produce the most fantastic colors in the woods we had ever seen before or since. This is a view in our back yard, looking straight back from the back of the house.
Even the shelties seemed to enjoy the fall weather, playing harder with each other in the yard than during the warmer summer months. I think the relief after summer's hot temperatures gets them going. I think the relief after summer's hot temperatures gets us ALL going! Pictured at right, and from left to right, are St. Magnus Ailea Moonstruck "Sookie" (Onyx's dam), Willows Shadow Dresed In Blu "Rookie" (my foundation bitch), and Ailea Stardust of Ishmael "Willie". Another, barely viewable on the porch of the house, to the far left and rear of the image, would be Taylormade For Winagin "Taylor". A yard full of blue babies! :-)
This kind of fantastic color here is fairly uncommon on any kind of regular basis around here in central North Carolina. Generally, we have too much rain or not enough rain for good color; it grows cold so that some trees change, then grows warm again to stop the process. It seems like any one of a number of things usually keeps us from being able to enjoy sights like those seen here. I was VERY grateful for the fall season, 1999. I think it a very good way to wind down the year!
